Food Stamp Income Qualification Guidelines

Food stamps, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), provide financial assistance to low-income individuals and families to purchase food. The eligibility requirements for SNAP are based on household size and income.

To be eligible for SNAP, your household’s gross monthly income must be at or below 130% of the federal poverty level. The federal poverty level varies depending on household size and is updated annually. As of 2021, the federal poverty level for a household of one is $12,880 per year or $1,073 per month.

Here are the income guidelines for SNAP eligibility based on household size:

  • Household of 1: Gross monthly income must be at or below $1,383
  • Household of 2: Gross monthly income must be at or below $1,868
  • Household of 3: Gross monthly income must be at or below $2,353
  • Household of 4: Gross monthly income must be at or below $2,839
  • Household of 5: Gross monthly income must be at or below $3,324
  • Household of 6: Gross monthly income must be at or below $3,809
  • Household of 7: Gross monthly income must be at or below $4,295
  • Household of 8: Gross monthly income must be at or below $4,780

For each additional household member, add $486 to the monthly income limit.

It’s important to note that these are gross income limits, meaning that they do not take into account any deductions or expenses that you may have. You may be eligible for SNAP even if your gross income exceeds these limits if you have significant expenses, such as high medical bills or child care costs. You can contact your local SNAP office or visit the SNAP website to learn more about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
