Hi Tommy, I understand your EBT card isn’t working and you and Jodi need to access your benefits. Here’s what you should do:
1. Report the problem and request a replacement card immediately.
Call your state’s EBT customer service number. Every state has a toll-free, automated EBT helpline available 24/7. This is the fastest way to report a damaged card and request a new one. You can often find this number on the back of your card, or by searching online for “[Your State] EBT customer service number.”
Use your state’s EBT website or mobile app. Many states have a website or app (like ConnectEBT or ebtEDGE) where you can manage your account, report a lost/stolen/damaged card, and order a replacement.
Important points:Deactivation: When you report your card as damaged, it will be deactivated immediately to protect your benefits. Any remaining balance will be transferred to your new card.
Delivery Time: Replacement cards typically arrive in the mail within 7-10 business days.
In-Person Pickup: In some states, you might be able to pick up a new card at your local SNAP office the same day or within a couple of days. You’ll need to check with your local office for this option.
PIN: You’ll be able to set a new PIN when your new card arrives. If your card was lost or stolen, it’s especially important to change your PIN.
2. While you wait for your new card:No in-store purchases without a card: You generally cannot access your SNAP benefits in-store without a physical EBT card.
Online purchases: Some USDA-approved websites (like Amazon and Target) allow you to use your EBT card information for online purchases. However, once you report your old card as damaged, you’ll get a new card number, so this option might be limited until your new card arrives.
Food banks: If you need immediate food assistance, consider reaching out to local food banks or pantries.
3. If you suspect fraud (e.g., if your card was working and now isn’t due to suspicious activity):Immediately contact your state’s EBT customer service number to report the issue.
Change your PIN as soon as possible.
Check your EBT account regularly for any unauthorized transactions.
In some cases, states may replace stolen benefits, but this varies and there are often time limits for reporting theft.
I hope this helps you and Jodi get your EBT benefits back on track soon!
