73 years old, living alone and in desperate need of food being mocked
Q) I am a Programs Director for a nonprofit organization in the state of Massachusetts and we assist our elderly community in need and we are very passionate about what we do. It is very distressful hearing that an elderly woman living in Wilmington, DE who is 73 years old, living alone and in desperate need of food being mocked and belittled. She reports that she hasn’t received her food stamps for the months of September, October and now November even though she submitted all the required documents in August 26. She reports going to the food stamp office every Friday for the past three weeks to check on the status And all she received was discourtesy, rudeness, disrespect and mockery. She also heard one of the staff saying to another worker “there is that old woman again”. The staff there need to treat people better and have compassion and the willingness to help the community there. If they cannot treat people with integrity and respect then they are in the working job and need to be replaced. Very sad.
A) I am so sorry to hear that this elderly woman is going through this. It is unacceptable that she has been treated this way. She is a human being and she deserves to be treated with respect.
I understand that you are passionate about helping your community, and I commend you for that. It is important to stand up for those who are being treated unfairly.
I would encourage you to contact the food stamp office in Wilmington, DE and let them know about this situation. You can also contact your state representative or senator and ask them to investigate.
It is important to remember that these people are supposed to be helping the community, not making it harder for people to get the help they need. If they cannot do their job with compassion and respect, then they should not be working there.
I hope that this woman is able to get the help she needs and that the staff at the food stamp office are held accountable for their actions.
